A 3-Day Istanbul Programme for International Hair Transplant Patients

A day-by-day look at what a typical 3-day hair transplant trip to Istanbul looks like, from remote pre-assessment before the flight to follow-up after returning home.

  • The process starts with a photo-based remote pre-assessment before the flight, which shapes how the Istanbul appointment is planned.
  • A typical programme runs over 3 days: arrival and in-person assessment, procedure day, and the first wash and check-up.
  • Follow-up continues after the patient leaves Istanbul — scabbing, possible shock loss, and the following months are tracked remotely through photos.

One of the most common questions from patients planning to travel to Istanbul for a hair transplant is how many days the trip will take and what those days actually look like. For many patients with limited time off, having a clear programme in mind makes the travel decision much easier. This article walks through what a typical 3-day Istanbul programme looks like, including what happens before and after.

Before Travel: Remote Pre-Assessment

The programme begins before the patient even arrives in Istanbul. Photos of the scalp taken from different angles — front, top, sides, and back — are sent to the coordination team. These photos are used for an initial assessment of visible donor density and the extent of hair loss, alongside information about the patient's medical history and expectations. At this stage, the patient is given an overview of possible techniques and a general outline of a plan; the final plan and graft range are only confirmed once the patient undergoes an in-person donor analysis at the clinic. Once this initial assessment is settled, the procedure date in Istanbul is set.

Day 1: Arrival and In-Person Assessment

When the patient lands at Istanbul Airport, they're met by the coordination team and transferred to their accommodation. Either the same day or the following morning, an in-person donor analysis, hairline design, and pre-procedure health assessment take place at the clinic. During this meeting, the patient's questions are answered, and the outline plan created during the remote assessment is finalised against in-person measurements. Accommodation options near the clinic are offered so the patient can rest comfortably before and after the procedure.

Day 2: Procedure Day

The patient is welcomed at the clinic in the morning, and the procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia. The length of the procedure varies depending on the planned graft count and the technique selected. At the end of the procedure, the first dressing is applied, and washing and aftercare instructions are reviewed in detail with the patient and, if present, their companion. The patient returns to their accommodation the same day. Since transport between the clinic and accommodation is arranged by the coordination team, patients don't need to organise transport themselves during this period.

Day 3: First Wash and Check-Up

The day after the procedure, the first professional wash takes place at the clinic, and the donor and recipient areas are checked. The patient is walked through the washing and aftercare routine they'll follow at home once more, in the language they're most comfortable with. After this check-up, the patient is generally ready for their return flight. In some cases, depending on flight timing or the clinic's assessment, the programme may be extended by an additional day.

Pre-Flight Guidance

Patients taking a long flight shortly after the procedure receive additional guidance: the change in cabin pressure and humidity can add extra sensitivity for a freshly treated donor and recipient area. Practical recommendations are shared, such as avoiding pressure on the area, using headwear only with the doctor's approval, and staying well hydrated; standing up or taking short walks during long flights to support circulation is also among the simple precautions recommended.

How Multilingual Support Works

Throughout the process, the patient is kept informed in their own language. The coordination team offers support in English, Russian, Arabic, and German, covering the initial consultation, procedure day, and follow-up communication. When needed, patients' questions are also answered directly by the doctor with an interpreter present.

After Returning Home: Follow-Up Continues

The process doesn't end once the patient leaves Istanbul. As the scabbing phase completes, possible shock loss occurs, and new growth appears in the following months, patients are asked to share photos at regular intervals, which are used to guide them. Washing frequency, products to use, and behaviours to watch for are communicated based on where the patient is in their recovery. This follow-up continues over a 12-month period, even once the patient has left Istanbul.

This 3-day structure offers a general framework for patients planning a limited trip to Istanbul; the personal plan is only finalised after donor analysis and a clinical assessment.
